Winning the Rose: A Commentary on the Romance of the Rose
Winning the Rose, a new original chapter-by-chapter Commentary on Guillaume de Lorris' and Jean de Meung's Romance of the Rose (Le Roman de la Rose), is now on the website here. This accompanies my previous translations of the separate but complementary works of the two authors.
The translations themselves are in octosyllabic couplets, to mirror the French text. Forming an 'Art of Love' for the 13th century, the combined work of both authors is the finest poem in French of the High-Medieval period.
