Jean de Meung: The Continuation of the Romance of the Rose
Jean de Meung's long continuation of the Romance of the Rose (Le Roman de la Rose) is now on the website here. Translated in octosyllabic couplets, to mirror the French text, it complements Guillaume de Lorris' original Romance of the Rose and, while influenced constantly by the original, expands and develops the theme of amorous love in new ways. An 'Art of Love' for the 13th century, the combined work of both authors is the finest poem in French of the High-Medieval period.
The translation is also available in download form, and will be available in Kindle and printed book form later.
I am now in the process of writing a detailed Commentary on the combined work, explaining the key themes of the allegory, and summarising the action and discourse chapter by chapter.
