Layamon: Brut, or The History of Britain

Our new translation, from the Anglo-Saxon, of Layamon's pseudo-history of the Britons, entitled Brut, is now available online here

The title Brut is a reference to the legend that one Brutus of Troy was the first king of the Britons.

A development of earlier works by Geoffrey of Monmouth and the Anglo-French poet Wace, Layamon's mixture of historical surmise and legend, as well as containing the tale of King Lear and his daughters, extends considerably that of King Arthur, who here is a post-Roman 6th century chieftain fighting the Saxons, although elements of the Arthurian myth are also present.
