Gottfried von Strassburg: Tristan
Our new rhymed verse translation of Gottfried Von Strassburg's 'Tristan' is now online here. Written in Middle High German at the start of the 13th Century, Gottfried gives us the classic retelling of the story of Tristan and Iseult, which he based on the Anglo-French version of Thomas of England. Though Gottfried's work is unfinished, the conclusion of the tale can be pieced together from the extant fragments of Thomas' version. The last four fragments from the Anglo-French are translated here, to provide a satisfactory ending. Both originals are in octosyllabic verse couplets, as is the translation.
