Apollonius of Rhodes: Argonautica
Chris Kelk's new translation of the 'Argonautica' of Apollonius Rhodius is now available on the website here. The only surviving Hellenistic epic, dating from the 3rd century BC, the Argonautica recounts in detail the myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece. Apollonius' erudite and complex re-telling influenced the works of Catullus, Ovid and Virgil, and has attracted substantial critical attention over the years. Chris Kelk's modern translation in rhyming couplets, is admirably clear in its recounting of the story, while nevertheless evoking in its style the long history of translations of this intriguing and influential epic.
