Racine - Berenice
My new verse translation of Racine's play Berenice, is now online. Staged for the court of Louis XIV, Racine used material from Imperial Rome and the reign of Titus, creating an interesting counterpoint of the two historical periods. It is perhaps Racine's most accessible play, quite modern in its approach (a tragedy where nobody dies) while classical in its treatment of the conflict between love and duty, the personal and the public life.
