Tasso: Fifty Selected Poems Set For Voice

Our new selection of fifty poems by Torquato Tasso, translated mostly from the Rime, is now available here. These are fully rhymed translations of verses which a number of Renaissance composers, including Claudio Monteverdi, set to music, primarily as madrigals. Here the text is presented as primary, not secondary to the voice, since it was precisely the intelligence, clarity, and sensitivity of Tasso’s verse that led so many composers to create vocal settings of the texts.
