Mandelstam: Four Essays on Poetry

Mandelstam's four great  prose essays on poetry are now available on the site here. The four are: 'The Morning of Acmeism', concerning the early 20th century Russian literary movement, a reaction against the vagueness of Symbolism, characterised by an emphasis on clarity; 'The Word and Culture' which proposes that poetry's task is to preserve the departed world; 'On Francois Villon,' a reinterpretation of the poet regarded as a key figure by the Acmeists; and 'Conversation about Dante', discussing the complexities of Dante's poetic speech, rhythm and structure.
