Work continues on a number of our pipeline projects, in particular the major 'literary' travel writings of the French Nineteenth century, including works by Lamartine, Gautier, Hugo, De Nerval, Flaubert/Du Camp, and Heine (an honorary Frenchman by reason of his lengthy exile in Paris).
These travel writings, covering Europe, Russia, and the Levant, provide a wealth of detail of the history, geography, and manners of regions which the French language, and France's political power, strongly influenced.
They also provide a fascinating record of the thoughts and attitudes, and insight into the characters, of these major writers, at a crucial period of literary and social history, namely European Romanticism and the transition to Modernism.
Major and highly enjoyable literary works in their own right, often lyrical and poetic, which anyone wishing to fully appreciate the authors and their times should consider reading, they are also a prelude to the territorial tensions between the European nations, and the issues of the Eastern Question, which led to increased conflict in the later nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
But above all they are the writings of authors who delighted in journeying, and observing, with fine-tuned sensibilities and deep appreciation of natural beauty. These works allow one to follow in their footsteps, enter a less developed age of 'tourism', and compare the world of today with their world.
The texts are illustrated, and extended with up to date place and artistic references, allowing easy search-engine lookup for deeper analysis, and helpful for those who, like ourselves, love to trace on the (now-electronic map) their travels, and view (virtually) the places and sites they visited.
More news of our travel and other translations, will follow in 2026.
We wish all our readers and contributors a Very Happy New Year.
