Gaspara Stampa: Fifty More Sonnets
A further selection of fifty sonnets by the great Italian Renaissance poet, Gaspara Stampa, is now available on the site here. Called 'the Sappho of our age' for her literary and musical skills, Gaspara further developed the Petrarchean sonnet, while recording the course of her love for Count Collaltino di Collalto, a Venetian nobleman, soldier and published poet. The first selection of fifty sonnets is designed to give a concise picture of her relationship with Collaltino, and its conclusion. This second selection aims to further present her literary skills, showing her use of traditional motifs and modes of expression, while extending the range of the Petrarchean form.
