Tacitus: The Histories

11 January 2017

A new translation of Tacitus' Histories is now available online on the website. The Histories are his account of AD69, the Year of the Four Emperors, and the rise to power of Vespasian and the Flavian Dynasty. Tacitus is the historian par excellence of ancient Rome, providing political and psychological insight as well as an evocative narrative style.

I am currently translating the Annals, his profound account of the reigns of Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero, of which the surviving texts are sadly incomplete. Nevertheless it remains a brilliant work.
