Selected Poems
translated by Kline, A. S. (contact-email)
,Selected poems by Gérard de Nerval - the pen name of Gérard Labrunie (1808–1855) - a major voice in French Romanticism. Celebrated for both his verse and prose, Nerval explored themes of memory, dreams, identity, and the elusive boundaries between reality and imagination. Included in this selection are some of his most iconic poems, such as El Desdichado, Fantaisie, and Artémis, each an example of his introspective and often mystical style.
In addition to his poetry, Nerval played a significant role in shaping French literary culture through his translations of German Romantic writers, notably Goethe and Schiller. His novella Sylvie influenced Marcel Proust, while later works such as Aurélia, or Dream and Life (Aurélia ou le Rêve et la Vie) ventured deep into the psychology of dreams, foreshadowing the concerns of the Surrealists.
This selection offers an introduction to Nerval’s poetic legacy of lyrical elegance and philosophical inquiry
