Lamartine's Travels in the Near East (Voyage en Orient, 1832-33) recorded his eighteen-month journey, made with his wife and daughter, through various territories that now correspond to Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Cyprus, and through Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

Lamartine's motives were political, religious, and literary. The death of his mother in 1829 had prompted a reassessment of his faith. The Romantic movement, in which Lamartine was a central figure, treated travel to the East as a path to self-discovery. After failing to win election in 1831 to the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of parliament under the July Monarchy) he left France for the Near East. During his travels his political convictions shifted from conservatism toward French republicanism.

The following translation is of Books I to III of Lamartine’s Voyage en Orient. Book IV containing other material, of a literary, social and political nature, which he associated with his travel notes has been omitted, along with some other minor, extraneous content. Book I covers his departure from Marseille on 11 July 1832 and arrival in Beirut on 6 September, and includes accounts of meetings with Lady Hester Stanhope and Bashir Shihab II. Book II records travel to the Holy Land and return to Beirut, where his daughter Julia tragically died of tuberculosis in November 1832. Book III follows his route from March 1833 through Syria, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

This enhanced translation has been designed to offer maximum compatibility with current search engines. Among other modifications, the proper names of people and places, and the titles given to works of art, have been fully researched, modernised, and expanded; comments in parentheses have been added here and there to provide a reference, or clarify meaning; and minor typographic or factual errors, for example incorrect attributions and dates, in the original text, have been eliminated from this new translation.
