The title of this collection of A. S. Kline’s poetry is a phrase taken from one of Virginia Woolf’s letters. The poetry is filled with natural imagery and reference, and often dwells on the contrast between the ancient world in which humanity was embedded within nature and the world of modernity where technology is gradually distancing humankind from nature, often to our social and material benefit but equally often to our spiritual diminishment. The author hopes for a harnessing of our science and technologies to our ultimate gain and not loss as a species. The challenges, even alienation, we face due to this disruption of our primal links to the planet, is of an order not experienced since the first rise of the city-states, and will prove equally traumatic.
