Théophile Gautier: The Major Travel Writings - Complete

Our series of fresh translations, all updated, extended, and illustrated, of Gautier's major travel writings is complete. They can now be read and downloaded in order, by following the links in the list below.

Gautier's Travels in Chronological Order

1836 (and 1846) – A Tour in Belgium

1840 – Travels in Spain

1842 – A Day in London

1850 – Travels in Italy

1852 – Constantinople

1852 – An Excursion in Greece

1858/9 (and 1861) – Travels in Russia

1869 – Travels in Egypt

Some of Gautier's best writing can be found in these accounts by a poet who loved to travel, and in sum represent perhaps the major achievement of the great age of French travel writing during the heyday of French influence in Europe (including Western Russia), and the Near East. They may be set alongside De Nerval's 'Voyage en Orient' of 1843, which is already available on the site here, and Hugo's 'Le Rhin' of 1838/9, which we are in the process of translating.
