William Shakespeare, baptised in 1564 and deceased in 1616, was an English playwright and actor. Acknowledged as the most distinguished playwright in English, his oeuvre includes 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and several poems. His theatrical works, performed globally, have been translated into all key living languages. His career flourished in London with the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which later became the King’s Men. Post-1589, his output spanned comedies, histories, and noted tragedies like Hamlet and Macbeth, concluding with tragicomedies. Shakespeare’s First Folio was published by his peers in 1623, ensuring his legacy. Despite scant biographical records, his enduring influence affirms his status as the Bard of Avon, with his body of work being continuously studied, and performed, across generations. This collection presents more than 1400 quotations, selected from the complete works and arranged by theme.
