‘Irreality’ is a term used by the author to describe the union of external world and internal mind that constitutes each person’s space of being, their ‘world’. In the metaphysical sense it is where perception meets inference, where expression meets echo; the region in time, the set of processes, that allow us to achieve self-created purpose in an intentionless universe. What we perceive is not the external reality but its interpretation within the mind and senses, that is here called irreality. These poems, by A. S. Kline, live on the transient, shifting boundary, which is penetrated in both directions, inwardly by the universe, outwardly by the mind, such that each partly exists within the other.
