Federico García Lorca’s Impresiones y paisajes (1918) collates his observations from travels within Spain, with a focus on Granada - with which we are concerned here. He offers a romantic interpretation of the city, critiquing contemporary changes (in line with Ángel Ganivet) and acknowledging its Eastern heritage. He contrasts the tranquillity of the plain with the tragic past of the Moorish district Albaicín. Native elements like local vegetation and Fajalauza pottery are prominent in his narrative. Lorca’s work is imbued with musicality, especially when describing the synaesthetic interplay of sound and colour in the city, presaging his later works on sensory experiences of urban environments.
